X-23 - The Night Thresher [Cryptohistorical Redesign]

from $8.00

My Cryptohistorical Redesigns series is easily my favorite long-running project. I love designing new characters and redesigning existing ones, but shunting them into a different time period is next level fun for me. NERD! So this is X-23, Laura Kinney, but from the late 1800’s. My concept was that she was the young widow of a struggle metalworker who had operated a struggling shop repairing agricultural equipment. After her husband was beaten to death for not paying tribute to a local enforcer gang in town, Laura fitted herself with blades and jointed exo-skeletal system to give her greater reach and stability, and hunted the men down in the hot summer nights of the following year, building a reputation among nervous townsfolk as ‘Night Thresher’. While the local sheriff’s posse grasped at straws to explain the horrific wounds found on the corpses out in the fields, which appeared to be the work of large animals not native to the region, she would set her sights on other men, and women, who had done her family wrong in the difficult post-war years, when her parents were driven into poverty by the ravages of the Civil War and the economic chaos that followed. Working her way backwards though her family tree, as the victims mounted and stories of the murders made headlines in New York, Boston, and Chicago, investigations came and went, with no one sparing a glance at the quiet smithy’s daughter who watched them pass through town.

Oh, and the scar on her chest: I rationalize this as injuries sustained when building and beginning to train with her blades. But it’s an X, so…
